For this assignment, you will expound on, expand on, subvert, restate or deconstruct a work chosen from a book or magazine.
Choose a work done by an artist that is still living. Look in books and magazines at the library. Check out Art Forum, Art in America and Sculpture magazines. It will help if there is something written about the art or artist, so don’t choose an image from an ad. Also, don’t choose a work that is already time-based.
You can generate a new work from an old one by finding an element in the old work to exploit. This element may be something conceptual, formal or related to subject matter. Examine the strategies the artists uses in his or her work and apply those to a new subject, or put them in a new context. The new piece need not have any visually apparent relationship to the old one, but there must be some explainable link.
Think about the implications that the translation of media will have on the work. How does a static painting change when translated to a time-based medium? How would a 3D work that takes up real space change when it becomes a light based experience?
This new piece will be completed utilizing both original and found video edited in final cut pro. You may explore and experiment with any lo-tech means of creating the content of your work, but no fancy digital or camera effects, just straight cuts or single shots. There are no minimum or maximum time limits on this project.
